Wear Behavior of Friction Material with the Addition of Steel Fiber

Abstract
Friction material wear is one of the main important features for commercial vehicles, especially when the service brake temperature is often higher than 300°C. Brake linings or brake pads are replaced very often. The present study determined the influence on the wear of an organic-based composite friction material by adding steel fiber in its composition. Brake linings of commercial vehicles were chosen for the present job. Tests were performed using an inertial brake dynamometer at 1:1 scale, using the test sequence specified in ISO26866 standard, designed to evaluate friction material wear. It was observed a decrease in the friction material wear rate around 50% with the addition of steel fiber in the temperatures above 230 °C. At lower temperatures, the same effect was not verified.
